Appearance by Gudrun Johnston

The details have been worked out and we are very fortunate to have Gudrun Johnston, The Shetland Trader, spending Saturday, May 14 with us. She has just published her first book called The Shetland Trader and will be signing copies of it. In addition there will be a trunk show with many of her most popular designs. In the afternoon she will conduct a workshop on traditional shawl making methods from the Shetland Isles.

The three-part construction of the shawl begins with a garter stitch triangle, which increases from the point outwards using yarnovers. Stitches are then easily picked up from the yarn overloops along the edges and the border is worked outwards from the triangle. The shawl is finished with an edging that is knitted sideways and attached to the live stitches of the border as it is being worked.

Each of the steps will be practiced separately so that students leave with the necessary skills to make their own "Aestlight" shawl in their favorite fingering weight yarn.

Some experience with lace and chart reading is encouraged.

Materials: 200 yds fingering weight yarn (for practice swatches in class)

US 6/4mm 24 inch circular needle

Stitch markers

A copy of the Aestlight Shawl pattern

Class Fee: $60

Registration for the workshop is open, but class size is limited, so please call the shop (617-731-4900) or come in to sign up.

The schedule for the day will be:

11:00 am - Trunk Show and book signing

1:00 - 4:00 pm - Shetland Shawl Workshop

Don't miss out on this unique event, since it will be one of Gudrun's last appearances before moving back to Scotland!
